The 2010 Kennedy Cup Tournament Is a Wrap!

A long, hot weekend of high level adult amateur soccer at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center has come to a close.  The 2010 Kennedy Cup Tournament was a major success, with three trophies in as many divisions being raised at the end of today's games.

Kennedy Cup - In the men's open division final, IPS/Marathon Taverna found the only goal of the game when Chris Skaggs scored on a diving header with less than five minutes to play.  The stalwart, disciplined Vancouver Thunderbirds marched back down the field and rung the crossbar with a blistering shot, but could not find the equalizer against the resident soccer maniacs from Portland.  The Kennedy Cup will stay in Oregon for at least a year, the first time since 2003.  In the third place game, Kells FC Swoosh convincingly put away Yakima United.

The McAdams Cup, the open women's division, was a round robin between three teams, Kells, Escape from New York (both Oregon teams), and the Whitecaps Prospects from the PCSL.  On Thursday night, Kells dispatched Escape from New York, but were turned back by the Whitecaps Prospects on Saturday by a score of 2-0.  On Sunday, the Whitecaps Prospects put on a clinical display in their showdown with Escape from New York, leaving no doubt about their claim to the McAdams Cup trophy.

Finally, in the inaugural Cascadia 30s Cup, Kells FC put away Kelly's Olympians in the final, 4-1.  Red Army defeated the Capitol Hill Rowdies 6-3 in the third place game.

We would like to offer special thanks to Soccerplex, Kells Irish Restaurant and Jason McMillen, University of Western States Chiropractic College and Chris Zander, Special Olympics of Oregon and Mark Hanken, Pacific Office Automation and Mark Fulk, Janet Irigoyen and the officials and assessors, Tamara Grigsby, Scott Rice, Greg Freuler, Ernesto Aguilar, Evan Baechler, Patrick Tumpane, and Phil Coates.

We would also like to thank WSSA and the Pacific Coast Soccer League for their partnership and help in conducting the tournament.  The members of the PCSL Board are sentinels shepherding the legacy of this long-running tournament, and one that the OPSL is proud to be a part of.  On behalf of the OPSL, we look forward to coming years of excellence of the Kennedy Cup Tournament.

2010 Kennedy Cup Tournament Director

The Kennedy Cup, an annual regional tournament between the best teams from the Pacific Coast Soccer League (B.C.), Washington State, and the OPSL, returns to the State of Oregon for the first time since 2003, when FC Swoosh won it.  As the name should indicate, the Kennedy Cup has an impressive legacy (scroll down for more on the history of the cup).   The tournament will take place at the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Center on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15.

In addition to the Kennedy Cup, which is for open men's team, this year will not only see thekevin-mcadams-cup-s return of the Kevin McAdams Memorial Cup (scroll down for more on the history of the cup) for open women's teams (the first time since 2005), but also the advent of the Cascadia 30s Cup, for men's teams over 30 or 35 years of age (depending upon which organization is hosting the cup).

In each cup tournament format, four teams qualify.  Two teams are from the host organization, and one each from the guests.  On Saturday, the host teams each play one of the guest teams.  On Sunday, two teams play for the championship and two play for third place.

Kell's Wins Regionals; IPS Come Close

Less than two weeks after both teams win their respective OPSL divisional titles, Kell's FC Portland (O30) and IPS/Marathon Taverna (Open/Amateur) headed south to Sacramento to compete as Oregon's representatives in the US Adult Soccer Association Region IV Tournament.

Kell's FC Portland started the tournament on Friday by soundly defeating Olympic Club (Cal North) 5-2.  On Saturday at 4 PM they faced the Big Ballers from Arizona, the same team that had knocked them out the two previous years that Kell's qualified to go to regionals.  This time the result was different, as Kell's dispatched the Big Ballers 3-1.  Waking early to face the Nomads (Cal South) at 8 AM, Kell's continued to find goals, easily putting away the Nomads 7-2.  With a win in their final game against the Capitol Hill Rowdies (WA) from Seattle, Kell's would win regionals for the first time ever, and qualify for the USASA National Cup Tournament next month.  In the first five minutes of the game, Kell's went down a man when a defender was shown a straight red for an iffy tackle.  The score remained deadlocked at nil-nil until Kell's was able to find the game winner in the 87th minute, ensuring they would be bringing a new piece of hardware back to Oregon.

In the Region IV Amateur division, IPS won their first match on Friday vs. Rovers from Colorado, 1-0.  On Saturday, IPS tied Santa Clara SC (Cal North) 2-2, and then again tied CGSA (Cal South) 2-2.  The winners from two brackets would advance to the finals, but IPS finished second in their bracket to Santa Clara CS, which finished with seven points.

Congratulations to both teams on such great performances and for representing Oregon soccer so well.  Surely nobody who has competed in the OPSL or seen OPSL games is surprised by how well both seasoned clubs fared at the 2010 regional tournament, but it is a testament to a lot of hard work on the part of many people and organizations, including OASA (special thanks to Anne Braghero), team and club sponsors (Kell's/Swoosh/FC Portland and Marathon Taverna), and the team and club personnel who take the time and energy to ensure the teams are organized, fit, and ready for such an effort.  Kudos to all.
